According to Kenneth Arrow it is impossible to improve the plight of any person without negatively impacting?
Q. the prosperity of another. If the current Health care system works for over 85% of Americans why are we trying to change the system? How much will the change negatively affect the majority of people that the system works for? Kenneth Arrow is an economist who won the Noble Prize for the Impossibility Theory. In a nutshell it states that it is impossible to improve one persons "lot" without negatively impacting another person.

A. No that is totally stupid and it contradicts the whole purpose of an economy. The whole point of prosperity is, each transaction benefits BOTH of the parties involved. Otherwise, why would they conduct the transaction??? That's why more economic activity benefits more people. If it was all winners and losers. then the more activity the more some would win at the expense of others who lose. Why would you willingly barter with someone if you feel like you're getting less in return for what you gave? Wouldn't you just refuse to barter until you find someone who has more to offer? That statement reveals a fundamental ignorance of the whole premise of a free market.

Anyone here know who the following economists are?
Q. Kenneth Arrow, Gerald Debreu, Alfred Marshall? Can someone tell me their accomplishments? They all have one thing in common - 10 easy points... PS: Anyone know if John Maynard Keynes supported Socialism and higher taxes during recessions? It might upset some trickle up believers...

A. Arrow and Debeu both won the Nobel prize. I know a little about Ken Arrow from his work in healthcare. I actually bought one of his books/papers a few months ago that I haven't read yet. It s his work on the, "Impossibility Theorem." Marshall was the first, I think, to formalize the concept of supply and demand graphically. It seems like he called the scissors or something. The Wiki entry says that Arrow and Debreu worked on a paper together proving general equilibrium mathematically. If I had to narrow it down to one thing I'd say they all 3 adhered to the Neo-classical school of economics. As far as Keynesian economics goes, his main concern is that recessions are caused by downward shifts in aggregate demand, due to animal spirits.… [cont.]

William Street - Kenneth Slessor?
Q. The red globe of light, the liquor green, the pulsing arrows and the running fire spilt on the stones, go deeper than a stream; You find this ugly, I find it lovely. Ghosts' trousers, like the dangle of hung men, in pawn-shop windows, bumping knee by knee, but none inside to suffer or condemn; You find this ugly, I find it lovely. Smells rich and rasping, smoke and fat and fish and puffs of paraffin that crimp the nose, of grease that blesses onions with a hiss; You find it ugly, I find it lovely. The dips and molls, with flip and shiny gaze (death at their elbows, hunger at their heels) Ranging the pavements of their pasturage; You Find this ugly, I find it lovely. I need to find 5 poetic techniques in this poem. They… [cont.]

A. first, i agree with rachel. is there a question here? or, are you just raging? second, why was this posted in the 'weather' category? third, the nobel prize(s) are awarded by a christian (as in evolved from a judeo-christian origin) committee of people from a christian nation. altho they do / are willing to award to anyone in the world, regardless of race, color, creed, political affiliation, etc. there is a natural inclination to overlook anyone from the islamic - and to a certain extent, sikh, buddhist, shinto, taoist, etc. - religions. it's probably not a concious or acknowledged bias, but it probably exists. (threat of terrorist activity has become a very real and significant factor in modern times!) so, altho there may have… [cont.]
