An institute is a permanent organizational body created for a certain purpose. Often it is a research organization (research institution) created to do research on specific topics. An institute can also be a professional body.

In some countries institutes can be part of a university or other institution of higher education, either as a group of departments or an autonomous educational institution without a classic full university status such as a University Institute.

The word comes from the Latin word institutum meaning facility or habit; from instituere meaning build, create, raise or educate.

In some countries, such as South Korea and Japan, private schools are sometimes called institutes, rather than schools.

In Sweden the are two well known institutes, the Nobel Institute and the Educational Institute Utbildningsinstitutet

In the United Kingdom the title 'Institute' is a protected word and companies or other organisations may only use that word if they are "organisations which are carrying out research at the highest level or to professional bodies of the highest standing". Furthermore, if a company is carrying on a business under a different name to the company name, that business name must comply with the Business Names Act. Use of the title 'Institute' requires approval from the Secretary of State. Failure to obtain approval is a criminal offence.

Why are most countries top educational institutes rarely ever located in the capital city?
Q. If you look at the majority of the world's top universities, you'll find that they are rarely located in the capital city of that country. They are often located in small towns and cities that had little significance prior to the establishment of the insitute. Why is this exactly? Doesn't the capital city seem a logical place for a top university?

A. Well often there is no prior plan as to where a top educational institution it is the past students achievement that actually attribute to the rating and the academic output from the lecturers and their ability to motivate their students to want to achieve. Hence there can never be a prior plan for the location of the best institution as being located in the capital city. Location therefore is secondary to achievement and attainment but prior achievements and standards set will continue to be achieve through quality assurance, hard work and outcomes through effective and efficient evaluation that will maintain the standards. That is the reason why the best universities will always select the best students as they know that they will be… [cont.]
