Shareholders share in the risk and rewards of a company with the rewards being in the form of payment of a dividend. The value of a share at any moment in time will be based on its future prospects of a dividend stream discounted back to the present. Shares can come in different flavours. Some have supervoting rights, some have a higher dividend than ordinary shares, some have no voting rights at all. Preference shares are different things in different countries. In UK they usually have superior rights either with regard to votes or dividend.
