A stock market or equity market is a public market (a loose network of economic transactions not a physical facility or discrete entity) for the trading of company stock and derivatives at an agreed price; these are securities listed on a stock exchange as well as those only traded privately.

The size of the world stock market was estimated at about $36.6 trillion US at the beginning of October 2008. The total world derivatives market has been estimated at about $791 trillion face or nominal value, 11 times the size of the entire world economy. The value of the derivatives market, because it is stated in terms of notional values, cannot be directly compared to a stock or a fixed income security, which traditionally refers to an actual value. Moreover, the vast majority of derivatives 'cancel' each other out (i.e., a derivative 'bet' on an event occurring is offset by a comparable derivative 'bet' on the event not occurring.). Many such relatively illiquid securities are valued as marked to model, rather than an actual market price.

The stocks are listed and traded on stock exchanges which are entities of a corporation or mutual organization specialized in the business of bringing buyers and sellers of the organizations to a listing of stocks and securities together. The stock market in the United States is NYSE while in Canada, it is the Toronto Stock Exchange. Major European examples of stock exchanges include the London Stock Exchange, Paris Bourse, and the Deutsche Börse. Asian examples include the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the Bombay Stock Exchange and the Karachi Stock Exchange. In Latin America, there are such exchanges as the BM&F Bovespa and the BMV.

Did the stock market crash because the banks were failing? How do failing stocks affect the economy?
Q. In words that I will be able to understand, can anyone explain to me the correlation between the banks, the housing crisis, and the stock market. And how does the stock market affect the economy itself? I am just beginning to understand what the stock market is, so numbers and statistics are really not helpful.

A. Basically it comes down to this: 1. Banks loaned money or gave credit to so-called 'high risk' people who were less likely to pay their debts, hoping that they would run into difficulty and be forced to pay a higher interest rate on the loans and increase the profitability of the loan. 2. Instead of being able to pay when the interest rates increased, lots of these people were unable to continue to pay the higher interest payments, so they defaulted on their loans and were forced into bankruptcy. 3. The banks, who expected customers to keep paying the high interest, were faced with credit cards and loans that were losing money due to huge amounts of bankruptcy. 4. The banks had no money to loan to home buyers. 5. As businesses get… [cont.]

What is the main difference between investing in stock market and gambling?
Q. Lets say you buy some stocks and after a month or so your money gets doubled. Would you not morally feel bad about the money that you got from stock market without doing a thing? Would you feel it is similar to gambling? Can one say that just because there is some science behind stock market the money that some gets out of stock market is more legit?

A. In most gambling, you are at a numerical disadvantage, and only luck determines if you win or lose - most of the time, you lose. In investing, an intelligent, diligent investor can consistently make a profit with a carefully chosen and researched portfolio of investments. Investing does entail some risks, but these can be minimized, and with intelligent investing, the numbers favor the investor. You are mistaken if you believe that you get money from the stock market, "without doing a thing." Investors who consistently make money need to do research, paperwork, and accounting. Picking random stocks might not be any work, and that really is gambling, but it isn't really investing. Real investing means keeping track of how the market is… [cont.]

Is the stock market expected to drop significantly in the next six months?
Q. My financial advisor advised me to move more of my investments into the bond market. He said that equities have been at all time highs, and the market is expected to correct itself sometimes between summer and this winter. However, I can't find any articles on this expected correction. Anyone know more about this? Also, what are some good online news organization where I can read articles about the stock market?

A. Your advisor is correct on these points: -equities are indeed at all time highs (well, the Nasdaq's still not quite there, but that 2000-time-frame peak was an abberation) -the market will almost certainly have a correction in the next six months -the market is often flat or a little down in the summer However, timing WHEN a correction will occur is difficult. If you are investing for the very long-term, then you may be just as well off ignoring the correction. That is, if it IS a correction and not a severe market breakdown (like '87 for example). But even given that, your advisor may still be steering you right if -- depending on your age and expected retirement date -- he feels that you're overinvested in stocks. P.S. you may… [cont.]

  • In a bull market the trend of prices, of course, is decidedly and definitely upward. Therefore whenever a stock goes against the general trend you are justified in assuming that there is something wrong with that particular stock.
  • The trend has been established before the news is published, and in bull markets bear items are ignored and bull news exaggerated, and vice versa.
