What were the physical burial customs in the Renaissance?
Q. For example, a physical burial custom was embalming, what are some other examples?

A. Well one could do well to read a Biography of Michaelangelo. Though famous for his work on the Sistine Chapel and his statue of David, what earned Michangelo big bucks were designs for elbaorate tombs for his patron Lorenzo De Medici and for Pope Julius II.. We are not talking about a statue or two & a bit of gold leaf, we are talking about dozens of statues and elaborate detailing!! Many elaborate tombs exist from this time period not only in Italy but also France and England. More care was taken for the Dead then the Living!!! Thus one can find a tie between the Renaissance and Ancient Egypt!! Aside from the burial of prominent rich people whose relatives could afford such elaborate trappings here are links and snippets snce for two… [cont.]

Q. If a military vet refuses to want a burial flag upon death, can they do this? If so, how can they? I was told that if someone becomes a citizen of another country the burial flag benefit is forfeited?

A. Just because you are a veteran does not mean you will get a military funeral..99 percent of veterans dont get a military funeral..You have to request one. If the people who are tasked with your burial dont know your a veteran then you will not be given any special type of ceremony..

Do TV and film crews use a real grave when filming a burial scene in a cemetery?
Q. I was watching a burial scene on TV. Most of the shots were obviously filmed in a real cemetery somewhere. However, I noticed that the actual interment was shown at close angles, where the buildings around the real cemetery were not visible. It got me wondering if the idea of lowering a fake coffin into a grave was too distasteful and if that part of the scene might have been filmed somewhere else. There was also an aerial shot right over the grave, looking down into it, which would have required a camera on a boom, so I thought that would also be intrusive in a real graveyard.

A. There is no charge for admission to any of the cemeteries in the city. The best known cemetary is Saint Louis # 1, which is close to the French Quarter. A public housing development was built next to it decades ago and that has resulted in some crimes in the cemetary. The incidents are rare - it is NOT a "high crime area" - but they have happened so you should visit Saint Louis # 1 or # 2 with a tour. You would be better going with a tour guide anyway as you will get a lot more out of the visit that way. Saint Louis Cemetary # 3 is well away from the French Quarter in the 3300 block of Esplanade Avenue. SLC # 3 has no security or crime problems and it is very close to several nice restaurants in the 3100 and 3200 blocks of… [cont.]

What is the approximate cost of a burial?
Q. What is the approximate cost of viewing a person at a funeral home for 1 day and then shipping them off to Puerto Rico for burial? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Asked by nyclastof9 - Tue Oct 7 09:51:28 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. We had a viewing for my mom, but it was for two days. The 3rd day was the funeral. Then she was cremated, and we buried the ashes on the 4th day. The total was *approx.* $5,000-$6,000 (can't remember exactly, it was 7 years ago). Having a viewing necessitates embalming the deceased which is very costly. One idea is after the viewing, have the deceased cremated. Obviously shipping ashes will be much cheaper than shipping a coffin.

How long on average will a concrete burial vault last underground?
Q. How many years will a concrete burial vault last and what would the condition of the casket be in after approx 25 yrs? just curious after visiting family. Thank you. Also, how would a grave a few feet away from a large tree be affected from the roots, etc.
Asked by ohio1973 - Sun Oct 7 10:08:44 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The answer to that can only be determined by what type of vault is is, does it have a polystyrene liner or is plain concrete? A concrete vault (concrete is a porous material) will withstand some years, but none the less be affected by the water and the soil. With that being said, same goes for the casket, if the vault had a plastic liner, the casket is going to last much longer, in a plain concrete vault, the integrity of the casket will be compromised within months.

A. Do the cliffs of Sparta count? All unfit newborns (ones with deformities or weak in nature) were casted aside of a cliff to die. The romans did the same thing. If the father were to decide not to claim his new born child they would cast them to the side of the river to die by starvation. Augustus saw the decline in Roman population and made a law forbiddening celibacy and the young to be unwed. Look into the Mayans and Aztecs. They would lay there sacraficed victims into heaps to let blood run down temples in honor of their gods to bring forth rain and good harvests. The catacombs are interesting for the fact that in Italy Italians would do their best to perserve their deceased. The more money the better perserved.

Which persons does the Catholic Church refuse to give burial in a Catholic cemetery?
Q. I'm curious to know which persons does the Catholic Church refuse to give burial in a Catholic cemetery?
Asked by Ashley J - Sun Jan 4 01:47:50 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Apostates, heretics, schismatics, the excommunicated, suicides, Freemasons, and public sinners, are not permitted to be buried in a consecrated Catholic cemetery. The refusal of the Church to give Christian burial to her bad children does not mean that she sentences them to damnation: judgment of the dead is in the hands of God. It is merely a public expression of her condemnation of sin, and a disciplinary measure so that her other children may avoid falling into such sins. Non-Catholics are not permitted burial in a Catholic cemetery, because since they did not belong to the Church during life, there is no reason for including them in the burial grounds for members of the Church, at death.

How long can a body be kept viewable between death and burial?
Q. I understand that former President Ford will be viewed up until his burial on January 3rd in Grand Rapids. The public will be viewing his body 8 days after his death. I remember when my Mom passed away on a Tuesday that the Funeral Director told me that to wait until that weekend (4 days) for an open casket funeral was risking her not being presentable. So, we had the funeral on Friday. Has Mortuary Science come that far in the 12 years since - to keep a body presentable 8 days for viewing?
Asked by humility - Fri Dec 29 15:36:06 2006 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Properly prepared, the body can be kept "on display" basically forever (well, at least several decades). This isn't a recent development, though. Lenin and Saint Bernadette, for example, have been on perpetual display since their deaths, and look just about the same now as when they died. Eight days is no big deal. It's all just a question of money and effort. Most of us and our loved ones, however, do not receive such elaborate care upon our demise. For a minimally-prepared body, a few days is still all you can reasonably expect for an acceptable viewing condition.

Q. what is so haunted about sacred indian burial ground?
Asked by Tom CJ - Fri Feb 8 19:55:22 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The concept is respect for the dead, and not disturbing the dead, or desecrating the sanctity of the burial ground. This is an area that is shared by the dead and their Creator, not mortals. Many American Indian cultures believe the name of the dead should not be mentioned - ever - so as not to disturb them, so one would definitely not desecrate the burial ground or platform. Others believe the modern grave is not to be visited. The dead are not there. Others believed (in former times) in placing dead relations on platforms, accompanied by their prized possessions, weapons and their favorite hunting horse (dispatched and placed near or under the platform) so they would have use of these things in the next life. There was no need to… [cont.]

How much to donate to Rev for a burial of ashes?
Q. My father died last month. There was memorial service and he was later cremated. We are now burying the ashes at the family plot. A reverend local to where my parents lived is going to come deliver a service graveside and my mom is wondering how much of a donation she should give as it is about a 45 min drive to the burial site and she wants to compensate him for his time. Any idea what would be fair? Thanks. To those who are answering other than a dollar amount, I said that my mom WANTS to make a donation. She knows she doesn't have to.

A. The village of Dinas Mawddwy is set amongst stunning scenery in the tranquil Llaethnant valley. The village was once the centre of the local lead mining industry. Dinas Mawddwy's rough stone buildings huddle along its wide main street, while steep hills and mountains soar up on either side. At the northern end, towers the summit of Foel Benddin at over 1, 700 feet. The Dyfi Bridge, just below the town, is the terminus for the railway which closed in 1950. The oldest building in Dinas Mawddwy is Gwesty'r Llew Coch ( the Red Lion Inn). A woollen mill, the Meirion Mill which is open to the public, the entrance gates stand opposite the Buckley Arms Hotel. A. It's not society that is at fault, just this particular firm of undertakers. Since funeral costs normally come out of the estate, most will give you time to pay. Burials are expensive. You have to pay for the plot - and land ain't cheap. You have to pay for a headstone - you can't expect stonemasons to work for nothing. If it's a cremation, there's a fee to cover the wages of the people who work there and the upkeep of the buildings and equipment. You have to pay the wages of the funeral director and pall bearers for half a day - plus the use of the hearse and limo. (Try hiring 7 plumbers and a van for that kind of money). Then if there's a service with a minister, choir and organist, they all need to eat. If there's no money to… [cont.]
