In geography, a country is a geographical region or a landscape, especially rural (the countryside, as opposed to the city). The term is often applied to a political division or the territory of a state, or to a smaller, or former, political division of a geographical region. Usually, but not always, a country coincides with a sovereign territory and is associated with a state, nation and government.

In common usage, the term country is used in the sense of both nations and states, with definitions varying. In some cases it is used to refer both to states and to other political entities, while in some occasions it refers only to states It is not uncommon for general information or statistical publications to adopt the wider definition for purposes such as illustration and comparison.

Some cohesive geographical entities, which were formerly sovereign states, are commonly regarded and referred to still as countries. England and Scotland, which are both part of Great Britain, while not sovereign states, are customarily referred to as countries. Northern Ireland is usually referred to as a province and not as a country, and Wales is a principality, but both may be referred to informally as a country in the context of discussing the "constituent countries" of the United Kingdom. Historically, the countries of the former Soviet Union and Yugoslavia were others. Former states such as Bavaria (now part of Germany) and Piedmont (now part of Italy) would not normally be referred to as "countries" in contemporary English. The degree of autonomy of non-state countries varies widely. Some are possessions of states, as several states have overseas dependencies (such as the British Virgin Islands, Netherlands Antilles, and American Samoa), with territory and citizenry distinct from their own. Such dependent territories are sometimes listed together with independent states on lists of countries, and may be treated as a "country of origin" in international trade, as Hong Kong is.

How are countries selected to compete at the Olympics?
Q. For example, countries like Canada, Russia, China, Usa, are always at the Olympics. Why isnt Vietnam, or Africa, or Iran or those countries in the Olympics? Do they have to go through a process or long application to be accepted into the Olympics? Why dont those countries have a National Team to compete at International/world levels?

A. How countries (territories, dependents and geographical areas) are selected to compete in the Olympics is by getting recognized by the International Olympic Committee. In 2004 Athens out of the 202 National Olympic Committees (NOCS) only Djibouti didn't participate. 2008 Beijing 3 new NOCs have been admitted Pacific Island nations of Tuvalu , Marshall Islands and Montenegro which declared its independence from the Serbian Republic. Next step which I believe your driving at is the athletes themselves that is all decided from how well the athletes do in their respective countries at world championships and other Olympic qualifying events as well as regional Olympic qualifying events. This determines the number of athletes or sport teams… [cont.]

How many and which countries got independence with India and Pakistan in 1947?
Q. India got independence on 15 Aug 1947, so did Pakistan on 14 Aug same year. But I heard that many other countries in which British were ruling got independence around the same time. So anybody knows which are those countries that got freed with both these neighbors?

A. Are you positive about your facts on this one? I remember the independence of India but at that time Pakistan was still part of India. Then they had the Hindu/Muslim wars which freed Pakistan from India. You need to look that up on wikipedia. Pretty much all of Africa was part of the British empire So you should look up the British empire to see which countries were involved and the dates of their Independence. China, many islands in the far east including Hong Kong. As a matter of fact the saying was "the sun never sets on the British Empire" so they were located around the globe.
