The stock or capital stock of a business entity represents the original capital paid into or invested in the business by its founders. It serves as a security for the creditors of a business since it cannot be withdrawn to the detriment of the creditors. Stock is distinct from the property and the assets of a business which may fluctuate in quantity and value. SharesThe stock of a business is divided into shares, the total of which must be stated at the time of business formation. Given the total amount of money invested in the business, a share has a certain declared face value, commonly known as the par value of a share. The par value is the de minimis (minimum) amount of money that a business may issue and sell shares for in many jurisdictions and it is the value represented as capital in the accounting of the business. In other jurisdictions, however, shares may not have an associated par value at all. Such stock is often called non-par stock. Shares represent a fraction of ownership in a business. A business may declare different types (classes) of shares, each having distinctive ownership rules, privileges, or share values. Ownership of shares is documented by issuance of a stock certificate. A stock certificate is a legal document that specifies the amount of shares owned by the shareholder, and other specifics of the shares, such as the par value, if any, or the class of the shares. An investor (could be an invdividual like you or me, could be a professional investor such as a hedge fund) first gets a quotation for the stock. Nowadays this is done via the Internet (you and me) or over a dedicated electronic system with a terminal in the fund's office (hedge fund guy.) 2. Next step is to decide what kind of order to place. There are two basic types: 'market orders' are orders to buy the shares at the best available price at the moment the order reaches the trading destination (more on that in a sec) and 'limit' orders specify a maximum price you are willing to pay; if the prevailing price when the order reaches the trading… [cont.] Answered by Surenuff - Thu Nov 2 06:39:02 2006 If a bank loans X ammount of money to someone, where it would be labled under in Equities? Q. I am 16 years old, and I am interested in the stock market. I own shares from several companies and have a basic understanding of how the stock market works. I want to get a degree in business and finance after high school, and then go into finance after University. So I would appreciate if some one who has some experience or has knowledge of them please explain both private equities and fixed income and how they work. BTW, I am from Canada if that makes any difference. Asked by Jon - Sun Jul 18 18:02:04 2010 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments A. Private equity is basically having ownership in a company that is not publicly traded. For example, owning a % of your buddy's company. You would have to be invited to have ownership in one of these types of companies. Fixed income securities are securities that pay you a set amount over regular intervals of time, usually on a yearly basis. An example would be a 10 year coupon bond which pays you 10% per year on the anniversary date of which you bought the bond until it expires, and then you receive your principle amount back. I hope this helps, and good luck with your pursuit into the world of finance.
