Financial economics is the branch of economics concerned with "the allocation and deployment of economic resources, both spatially and across time, in an uncertain environment". It is additionally characterised by its "concentration on monetary activities", in which "money of one type or another is likely to appear on both sides of a trade". The questions within financial economics are typically framed in terms of "time, uncertainty, options and information".

  • Time: money now is traded for money in the future.
  • Uncertainty (or risk): The amount of money to be transferred in the future is uncertain.
  • Options: one party to the transaction can make a decision at a later time that will affect subsequent transfers of money.
  • Information: knowledge of the future can reduce, or possibly eliminate, the uncertainty associated with future monetary value (FMV).

The subject is usually taught at a postgraduate level; see Master of Financial Economics.

A. You would probably be best served by working towards an MBA with your focus on Finance. The undergrad degree in economics has a slightly less applicability in real-world job searches. Hope this helps!

What are the Scholarship options for doing Masters in Financial Economics at Oxford University (in this case)?
Q. My friend's daughter, who has had a brilliant academic and co-curricular record, has secured admission for doing MFE at Oxford. She's from India, and did her Engineering at NUS (National University of Singapore) with a Scholarship, and is working for the last few months at a leading Investment Bank in Singapore. Normally, she would have got a prestigious Scholarship like the Rhodes Scholarship, but most of such scholarships have an eligibility requirement that if the student is an Indian, she must have graduated from an Indian University, and she hasn't. Being an Indian, she can't apply as a Singaporean either. She can't pursue the program without a scholarship, given her financial condition. What scholarship options does she have? … [cont.]
