Investment or investing is a term with several closely-related meanings in business management, finance and economics, related to saving or deferring consumption. Investing is the active redirection of resources: from being consumed today, to creating benefits in the future; the use of assets to earn income or profit.

An investment is a choice by an individual or an organisation such as a pension fund, after at least some careful analysis or thought, to place or lend money in a vehicle (e.g. property, stock securities, bonds) that has sufficiently low risk and provides the possibility of generating returns over a period of time. Placing or lending money in a vehicle that risks the loss of the principal sum or that has not been thoroughly analyzed is, by definition speculation, not investment.

In the case of investment, rather than store the good produced or its money equivalent, the investor chooses to use that good either to create a durable consumer or producer good, or to lend the original saved good to another in exchange for either interest or a share of the profits.

In the first case, the individual creates durable consumer goods, hoping the services from the good will make his life better. In the second, the individual becomes an entrepreneur using the resource to produce goods and services for others in the hope of a profitable sale. The third case describes a lender, and the fourth describes an investor in a share of the business.

In each case, the consumer obtains a durable asset or investment, and accounts for that asset by recording an equivalent liability. As time passes, and both prices and interest rates change, the value of the asset and liability also change.

An asset is usually purchased, or equivalently a deposit is made in a bank, in hopes of getting a future return or interest from it. The word originates in the Latin "vestis", meaning garment, and refers to the act of putting things (money or other claims to resources) into others' pockets. See Invest. The basic meaning of the term being an asset held to have some recurring or capital gains. It is an asset that is expected to give returns without any work on the asset per se.

What is the best success you had in investing? What are you method to invest?
Q. I am interested in finding out what types of investing people do and the greatest success they had over a period of time. I am not interested in someone trying to sell me a product. Also, I am interested in finding out any failure they may have had in investing.

A. I'll tell you about some of my failures, you'll certainly learn more from them! When trying to pick the bottom of a stock that's fallen a lot, don't buy your whole position at once! I did that when I bought Kohl's, KSS, at $60, and then it proceded to drop past $50. I eventually sold it around $49 I think, when in fact I should have been starting to buy some more around there. The point is you never know how low a stock price can go, so it's best to not to put all your money in all at once, because your timing might be wrong.

What can you learn from investing in stock market?
Q. It's for a project I have to do. What exactly can you learn from investing in the stock market? I wrote how unpredictable it is and how hard it is to choose what stock to buy. You can never know for sure how the stock will do over an extended period of time.

A. There is a difference between what one can learn and what one does learn. For me, I learned the hard way to cut ones losses rapidly, take a little of your profits off the table after a significant rise in stock prices, avoid high PE stocks like the plegue, avoid speculative stocks for the most part, avoid tech stocks also for the most part, put a fair portion of you money into index funds and mutual funds so you don't have to spend too much time baby sitting it, try not to have more than 30 stocks in your portfolio because it takes too much effort to keep track of them, keep weeding out the underpeformers and replacing them with stocks with greater potential. Alway have a healthy cash reserve and add to it as stock prices rise,… [cont.]

A. The very old saying Do not keep all your egg in one basket applies. While investing keep following in mind. (1) Safety (2) Liquidity In my opinion invest 20% in stock (speculation) 40% in medium term consistent interest earning deposits (from well known companies) , 20% in long term investment and 20% in liquid asset (savings deposit, cash) to meet unforeseen exigencies.
