What Career Can I have with a Political Science/Economics Degree?
Q. I am very interested in business and political science. I am currently majoring in business administration with a concentration in entrepreneurship and economics, but I am thinking about minoring in political science. Good Graduate Masters/PhD programs in Political Economics?
Q. Can you identify the best Political Economics programs in the US? I would prefer that the approach be less number crunching, model building and more Marx and Smith like. Preferably international political economics. Can be an overseas institution as well.

A. You're going to have a real tough time finding that. Economics in general, at this point, is highly quantitative. An MA in Econ is basically an MA in applied Math. Furthermore, Political Economy is a troubled field. Few schools hire in that area, assuming a professorship is your goal with such a degree. You should probably look more towards political science or philosophy, if you really want to study the classic philosophers. The only school that really comes to mind for top political economy programs would be Princeton, but any school ranked in the top 100 is likely to be highly math based.

Will having triple minors in Political Science, Economics and Physics increase my chances of landing a job?
Q. Or will it just look tacky? My major is in Ethnic Studies. I have taken Calculus I and II, some lab courses in Optics and Lasers, and I also have strong minors in Economics and Political Science. Is there still a possibility that I can land a decent job after graduation? I plan to work a couple of years while taking steps to become a Real Estate Appraiser later on and go for my Master's degree in Urban Planning. With this plan, I can graduate from college debt free and I don't have to take any additional student loans out. Any respectful comments would be helpful.

A. An appraiser job is similar to that of a real estate agent. The education is not as important as the ability to network and show yourself to be reliable and accurate. My state requires you to apprentice with someone for a while before you're given your appraisal license. If you find someone to work under then you may be able to jump right into a solid clientele. If not then you will have to scrounge for work. If you get a masters degree none of the rest maters (as long as the masters program will accept you in). Until you get your masters you will look like a jack of all trades and a master of none. If you go to get a job in the business world it could backfire on you. The only problem is you need to make sure that the masters… [cont.]

Q. Whats the difference between buisness and political economics?
Asked by Samuel - Tue May 5 11:48:42 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Political economy originally was the term for studying production, buying and selling, and their relations with law, custom, and government. Political economy originated in moral philosophy. It developed in the 18th century as the study of the economies of states polities, hence political economy. In late nineteenth century, the term "political economy" was generally replaced by the term economics, used by those seeking to place the study of economy upon mathematical and axiomatic bases, rather than the structural relationships of production and consumption Business economics is that part of economic theory which focuses on business enterprises and inquires into the factors contributing to the diversity of organizational structures… [cont.]

What political party should I make up for Economics?
Q. In our economics class we have to make up a new political party, state all our views, have a target age group/ethnic group, and be able to answer questions after our presentations. I'm doing fine with all the views but I need a party name. Other kids came up with silly things like the pineapple party but I'd like something a little more creative than that. And ideas would be a great help! Thanks!

A. Try "The Conserveral Action Party". It combines conservative and liberal and says Action, which political parties actually don't do.

How can I go to college and learn about Political Science, Sociology, Economics, and Spanish all at once?
Q. Okay so here is my life plan in a nut shell...well as much of a nut shell as I can get it into... I want to teach College. I know I have to get a PhD. Now I am in my second year in undergrad. What I was thinking was I want to Double major in Political Science and Sociology. I want to get teacher certified to teach in at least Political Science at the high school level. Well most high school political Science teachers also have to teach economics so I will need to know enough about that to teach that. Now, the reason why I want to teach at high schools while I get my masters is because a.) some schools help their teachers out with tuition. and b.) it will give me some kind of teaching experience while I pursue a Master's degree in… [cont.]

A. You can do it all but you will be in school forever! A friend of mine majored in history and did a social studied cert so she could teach high school. She ended up teaching econ and didn't need any extra training for it. So unless you really want to, you won't have to minor in econ to teach it in high school. You want to teach Soc. as a PhD? Cause you could teach Poly Sci as a PhD that way you could get the BA in it, then the social studies cert. and the MA, then the PHD and concentrate on one subject rather than bouncing around. Then do a minor in Soc. I def. recommend a Spanish minor though, having a foreign language on your resume helps get a job and definitely study abroad that will help too.

What is it about the political right and economics?
Q. Don't you think they should stop lying to the American people about their tax cuts for the rich working? Conservatives believe that by cutting taxes (mostly for the rich), deregulating, and cutting social programs for the working poor, you can increase the rate of growth. Basically SUPPLY-SIDE economics as seen under Reagan and Bush Jr. Liberals believe that by shifting the tax burden to those who can most afford it (the rich), creating laws that protect workers, consumers, and citizens from corporate abuse, and creating programs to help people help themselves (state subsidized universities, student grants, subsidized loans, GI Bills for soldiers, job training) we can increase the size of the middle class while increasing the rate of… [cont.]

Then Fix my roads, do something about Health-care,Teach kids to read and write and get the homeless off the streets. Somehow they never seem to do the things they promise.

Is a BA degree with a double major in Economics and Political Science worth getting?
Q. I am wondering before I apply, also is the degree with an MBA a great combo?
Asked by Sean M - Wed Sep 23 21:12:09 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That really depends on what you want to do with it. If your thinking about going into politics I'd say that is a decent combo but instead of an MBA I'd think law school would be the better pick. Double majoring is not allowed at many Universities. You would most likely have to attend separate universities or Major in one and Minor in the other. Economics and political science are interesting and important subjects but you have to ask how they will apply to real-world jobs. Most the people I know with either of the above degrees are teachers or are working somewhere completely out of their degree field.

A. Considering many of the courses are going to overlap, you could probably get it done in 4 years. At worst, I'd say 5 years max. Ask to see the course sheet for both majors and see how much overlap there is, and how many electives you have.

A. A triple major doesn't really help with a career--I would do economics and one of the others (Int'l politics in poli sci probably). The obvious place is a management training program at a bank or other financial services institution. You could also possibly find other management training programs in other fields, and there are think tanks and other non-profits that deal with international issues that would use you as an entry-level professional.
