A professional is a member of a vocation founded upon specialised educational training.

The word professional traditionally means a person who has obtained a degree in a professional field. The term professional is used more generally to denote a white collar working person, or a person who performs commercially in a field typically reserved for hobbyists or amateurs.

In western nations, such as the United States, the term commonly describes highly educated, mostly salaried workers, who enjoy considerable work autonomy, a comfortable salary, and are commonly engaged in creative and intellectually challenging work. Less technically, it may also refer to a person having impressive competence in a particular activity.

Because of the personal and confidential nature of many professional services and thus the necessity to place a great deal of trust in them, most professionals are held up to strict ethical and moral regulations.

How do you be professional at work?
Q. I don't mean to "act" professional. I mean to sincerely "be" professional with people and your job/career?

A. A "professional" is always polite, never raises his/her voice and keeps business and personal life strictly separated. You will have to treat clients with utmost respect and courtesy. Always listen to what they have to say before you answer. Requests from your boss should be answered promptly with an outline how long it will take you to get the job done and preferrably answered "consider it done". Don't complain, never engage in office gossip. Stay polite but aloof to people that work under you. Especially when you are in a manager position. Remember your personal life doesn't belong at work if you want to be a real "Professional" neither do moodswings, attitudes and bad personal habits. The less people "know" about you the more they… [cont.]

How many times do professional writers edit?
Q. I was under the impression that professional authors would edit a piece upwards of 10 times (or much more) before it appears in print. I seem to recall reading somewhere that War and Peace got edited a hundred times before it reached its finished form. My friend, however, who has read many interviews with writers, thinks that most professional authors revise only two or three times before they are done. Perhaps I am wrong? I thought I would post this question to see what others think.

A. I never stop editing my work. I can't help but check over the previous days work before I start ... and always edit. I then edit numerous times when the work is complete. I really can't say how many, probably five or six complete checks. I cut away all excess baggage, every word has to count otherwise it's thrown out. I check grammar, spelling and consistency of names and words. I make sure all loose ends are tied up, make sure any changes have been smoothly incorporated. On the day my last novel was to be handed over to the publisher, I changed the first three pages - PANIC!!! I edited and changed the end pages even whilst the publisher's editor was checking. Editing is an ongoing process, it's what moves a story from the realms of… [cont.]

What are some professional careers working with people with disabilities?
Q. In the last several years, I have been working in this field and I think I would prefer to stay in it. I just want a change. Right now, I am a special ed teacher (my students have mild learning disabilities and speech impairments). I want to explore other options possibly in a supervisory or professional nature and outside of the school environment? What qualifications and education are needed?
