From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A school (from Greek σχολή (scholē), originally meaning "leisure", and also "that in which leisure is employed", "school"), is an institution designed to allow and encourage students (or "pupils") to learn, under the supervision of teachers. Most countries have systems of formal education, which is commonly compulsory. In these systems, students progress through a series of schools. The names for these schools vary by country (discussed in the Regional section below), but generally include primary school for young children and secondary school for teenagers who have completed primary education. In addition to these core schools, students in a given country may also have access to and attend schools both before and after primary and secondary education. Kindergarten or pre-school provide some schooling to very young children (typically ages 3-5). University, vocational school, college or seminary may be available after (or in lieu of) secondary school. A school may also be dedicated to one particular field, such as a school of economics or a school of dance. Alternative schools may provide nontraditional curriculum and methods. There are also non-government schools, called private schools. Private schools may be for children with special needs when the government does not supply for them; religious, such as Christian Schools, Khalsa Schools, Torah Schools and others; or schools that have a higher standard of education or seek to foster other personal achievements. Schools for adults include institutions of corporate training and Military education and training. In homeschooling and online schools, teaching and learning take place outside of a traditional school building. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What is the difference between alternative schools and special schools? Q. Many people always assume that only special needs students go to alternative schools when it's not true. Isn't it against the "least restrictive environment" to send special needs students to the alternative school? Shouldn't they go to a special school since it meets their needs? Alternative schools don't support special needs students well. They don't have speech or self-contained classes. What kind of parent would send their own special needs child to the alternative school that doesn't even meet their needs? The special school would be more appropriate. I thought alternative schools were schools that were nontraditional. I thought they provided a choice for students. Students aren't forced to go to alternative schools. It's… [cont.] Asked by Dakota Fanning Fan - Tue Aug 21 15:32:39 2007 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments A. You are correct with your statement that parents with a special needs child should NOT send their child to an alternative school. Alternative schools are for those children that are at an impass and the public school system is looking for a way to put that child out of their school system. They explain it to the parents as a "way of helping their child" when in reality, it helps them...the school. The school will earn an A grade because they have less "special education" students in their school, who may not pass all the state tests...ie: FCATS. Special needs students should be placed in the public schools and have IEPs in place that met all the childs individual needs, as documented by their parents, teachers, physicians and social… [cont.] Answered by Patti - Tue Aug 21 17:02:33 2007 What are the best schools to get a bachelors from in order to attend Harvard Medical school? Q. I want to apply to Harvard Med School but obviously need to get my bachelors first. I also know that certain schools pull more rank than others. What schools would be best to consider for my undergraduate in order to have the best chance at Harvard Med. Asked by kev harris - Sun Oct 19 22:00:17 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Honestly, your best chances of going to Harvard Medical School is acing all of your classes, acing the MCAT, doing tons of research (Harvard likes research), and do lots of extracurricular activities. Oh, and some luck and good fortune. Your undergraduate school won't mean squat if you don't do well. But as someone else mentioned, Harvard isn't even the best medical school. Johns Hopkins and Mayo on the other hand... Good luck! Answered by Shnake - Sun Oct 19 22:10:55 2008 Can anyone suggest some good schools for environmental studies?
Q. I am planning on returning to school in the next few years to study either environmental engineering or environmental law (not sure which just yet). Can anybody suggest some good schools for either of these fields? I already have a few schools in mind, but I am fishing for suggestions I may not have considered. I live in Virginia, USA but am willing to move anywhere if need be. Right now (for law) I am looking into William & Mary, Lewis and Clark College, Appalachian School of Law, University of Oregon, and University of Colorado. Any other thoughts from those who know?
