Stocks are devices used in the medieval times for torture, public humiliation, and corporal punishment. The stocks partially immobilized its victims and they were often exposed in a public place such as the site of a market to the scorn of those who passed by. Since the purpose was to punish offenders against the standards of conduct of the time anybody could assault, revile or aim filth at the victim.

Form and application

The stockade are similar to the pillory and the pranger, as each consists of large, hinged, wooden boards; the difference, however, is that when a person is placed in the stocks, their feet are locked in place, and sometimes as well their hands or head, or these may be chained.

With stocks, boards are placed around the legs or the wrists, whereas in the pillory they are placed around the arms and neck and fixed to a pole, and the victim stands. However, the terms can be confused, and many people refer to the pillory as the stocks.

Since stocks served an outdoor public form of punishment its victims were subjected to the daily and nightly weather. As a consequence it was not uncommon for people kept in stocks over several days to die from heat exhaustion or hypothermia.

The practice of using stocks continues to be cited as an example of torture, cruel and unusual punishment. Insulting, kicking, spitting and in some cases urinating and defecating on its victims could be applied at the free will of any of those present.

What are good stocks to buy in the short term?
Q. What are good stocks to buy in the short term? My econ class is playing a stock game but using the real stock markets. I have $100,000 to spend. I am hoping to find some stocks that are going up in the short term because school ends in two months. Any good suggestions?

How many stocks should I carry in my portfolio?
Q. I am looking to invest long-term (20+ years) and this is my first time buying stocks. I have a medium to high risk tolerance. I will be initially investing $2500. The goal is growth for retirement fund. Wondering how many different stocks to buy with my $2500. Also, what would you say are good markets/industries to buy into now for maximum growth over the next 20 years? I already have mutual funds... so I'm hoping to get into something with more potential payback (realizing the added risk also).

A. To absolutely minimize your individual risk, the theoretical number is 20. Beyond that the risk reduction of added stocks is minimal. But with only 2500 you can not begin to approach that, but it is a goal. The fact that you currently have mutual funds does mitigate your risk somewhat. As one responder mentioned when you have more than 10 it becomes somewhat of a task keeping track of them. And with 10 your individual risk is only slightly more than at 20. I attempt to keep my portfolio below 20 but by tracking the portfolio with Yahoo, it becomes much more managable to track a larger number of stocks. The key is not only having say 10 different stocks but they should also be distributed amongst various segments of the economy and… [cont.]

How do you start smart investing in stocks?
Q. I was told to do stock options over investing in stocks? Yet,I find the risk factor is too high in options. So I rather invest more in stocks and see what type of outcome manifests itself. What would be the first step? Besides going on these sights like Etrade etc. Is wall street still open for the little guy? Please help!!!

A. The first step is to educate yourself. There are many books on investing (Investing for Dummies?), and many, many online sites that can help. Every major investment company has a web site with educational info (Schwb, Vanguard, Fidelity, T Rowe Price). Also every mutual fund company. Most novice investors start with money markets and mutual funds. See Morningstar.com for info and fund evaluations. You need to understand a) the risk of whatever you invest in. There are different kinds of risk, and EVERY investment has SOME kind of risk, even Treasuries. b) how the investment works: will it produce interest income, dividend income, capital gains, tax writeoffs? How valuable each of these is to you depends in part on your tax bracket… [cont.]
