Education in the largest sense is any act or experience that has a formative effect on the mind, character or physical ability of an individual. In its technical sense, education is the process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another.

Etymologically, the word education is derived from educare (Latin) "bring up", which is related to educere "bring out", "bring forth what is within", "bring out potential" and ducere, "to lead".

Teachers in educational institutions direct the education of students and might draw on many subjects, including reading, writing, mathematics, science and history. This process is sometimes called schooling when referring to the education of teaching only a certain subject, usually as professors at institutions of higher learning. There is also education in fields for those who want specific vocational skills, such as those required to be a pilot. In addition there is an array of education possible at the informal level, such as in museums and libraries, with the Internet and in life experience. Many non-traditional education options are now available and continue to evolve.

A right to education has been created and recognized by some jurisdictions: since 1952, Article 2 of the first Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights obliges all signatory parties to guarantee the right to education. At world level, the United Nations' International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of 1966 guarantees this right under its Article 13.

Differences between teaching in a community college and a high school?
Q. For people who have taught at both locations, what are some of the differences and pros/cons about teaching at a community college and teaching at a high school? I've taught English and Humanities at community colleges, and I currently teach elementary school music at a private school. But I've never taught English at the HS level and want to know its ups and downs. Thanks! Thanks for all the answers so far! I hope they keep coming! For those who asked, there were ups and downs teaching at the CC, but overall I enjoyed it. Main problem is that I only landed adjunct (part time) positions, which offer terrible pay and no benefits (it's very difficult to get a full-time tenured position). Pretty much all of my students with part time… [cont.]

A. Good luck! College age kids want to be there for one reason or another but high school kid have to be there. There are many great students and I hope you get those but watch out for the hardended ones. It can be scarely. I was told to never walk inside of the high school alone at one time because the kids were jumping teachers and the principals! That was in a mid sized town and the only high school. Best wishes because the kids who want to learn will benfit from your experience.

How do I start teaching my toddlers to write and read?
Q. I have a 2 and 3 year old. They know their basic colors, the alphabet, they can count to 10 in english and spanish. How would I go about teaching them to write? I thought that I would first start teaching them shapes, how to draw them and then start showing them how to write the alphabet, would that be the right order? Any suggestions?

A. There are stages to writing. All of us have muscles in our fingers and children's muscles are developing. As muscle develops writing will increase. Have your children do things such as playdough, blocks, unifex cubes, use tweezers to pick up cotton balls, string beads, cutting etc. Any thing to work those fine motor skills! A two year old should be scribbling with crayons and markers-having fun. At three teach the correct pencil grip. Teach letters and shapes that are round first, straight next, and then curves. The shape of a circle, the letter o the number 0 would be a great start. Use small crayons or pencils. Short pencils or crayons broke in half work best for those little fingers to fit around. Check out handwriting without tears.

Where do you start when teaching English to someone?
Q. I want to teach my boyfriend English a little more formally. He speaks Spanish, and understands almost all of what I say in English. He claims, however, not to understand pronunciation and some verb rules (especially past tense). How to you start teaching phonics and where do you go from there?

A. Do you know how to pronounce the word "ghoti"? Actually it's "fish": -- f like the gh in enough -- o like the o in women -- sh like the ti in nation In English there is no one-to-one correspondence between sounds and the letter patterns that represent them. I find it easiest to memorize words by sight. The grammar you'll just have to tackle step by step. Move from present to past tense.
